Current and former Trustees gathered at Government House to celebrate the enduring legacy of Helen Macpherson Smith Trust and the leadership that has guided the Trust’s vision for 75 years.
The Government House anniversary reception brought together grantee partners, sector colleagues and long-standing friends of the Trust from across its history. For many former Trustees, it was an opportunity to reconnect with organisations and individuals whose work they had supported during their time with the Trust.
“The occasion at Government House cemented for me the honour I felt all over again to have been a Trustee,” said Frances Awcock AM, HMST Trustee (2007-2016). “The wide range of organisations the Trust has supported through its proud history speaks to the constant need across Victoria for financial assistance in particular. Then to have seen the impact the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust’s careful decisions in making each and every grant purposeful and usually effective made it all the more satisfying. I am honoured to have been part of it all and still feel deeply connected with the Trust, its people and its purpose.”
Since the Trust was established in 1951, Trustees have shared responsibility for ensuring Helen’s gift continues to benefit Victorian communities. The anniversary year offered an opportunity to acknowledge not only the impact achieved through the Trust’s funding, but also the dedication of those who have served as Trustees.
“Serving as Trustee and Chair was a particular honour. It gave me a deep appreciation of Helen’s remarkable legacy, benefiting future generations, and the responsibility required from Trustees in delivering it.”Dr Philip Moors AO, HMST Chair (2014-2020)
Across changing social, economic and community contexts, Trustees have contributed their time, expertise, and judgement to guide the Trust’s work and respond to evolving needs. While each has brought their own perspective and experience, together they have helped ensure the Trust remains effective, relevant and responsive over time.

Claire Higgins, HMST Trustee (2017-2023), in conversation at Government House
“The anniversary celebration was a very special occasion to reflect on the Trust’s history and reconnect with those associated with its work,” reflected Claire Higgins, HMST Trustee (2017-2023). “It reminded me that I was fortunate to have the opportunity to contribute to the Trust’s work and it highlighted the shared commitment that has sustained the Trust’s impact over 75 years.”
As the Trust looks ahead, the gathering served as a reminder that its impact has been built through decades of shared commitment and care, creating a strong foundation for the future.
