Recognition for North Melbourne Language and Learning's innovative program
North Melbourne Language and Learning (NMLL) was recently one of three finalists in the AMES Australia Diversity Innovation Award category at the 2016 Victorian Learn Local Awards. The award recognises the commitment of a Learn Local organisation to provide culturally inclusive training opportunities for learners from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
The Community Learning Champions Program run by NMLL with funding from an HMSTrust Social Impact Grant significantly increases the local CALD communities’ involvement in the design and delivery of courses in their local setting.
To date, 32 Community Learning Champions have been recruited and trained to support their respective communities with entry points to education and training in an environment that is localised, small, easy to access, low on red tape, flexible and responsive.
The two other finalists were Diversitat’s Safe Driving Program and Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre’s CALD Education and Employment Pathways Program with Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre selected as the winner.
